Abstract
It is now well established that nutritional deficiencies have a rapid and deleterious effect on the immune system which exceeds in intensity its effects on most other systems of the body. Suboptimal dietary intake of essential nutrients represents a major dietary problem among some low-income Americans as well as many people in Third World countries. It leads to increased incidences of infection, disease, and mortality (Chandra and Newberne, 1977). Malnutrition including deficiencies in zinc are also a major factor in the etiology of many Western diseases, e.g., AIDS, cancer, alcoholism, renal disease, and gastrointestinal disorders (Endre et al., 1990). As a result, increased incidences of sepsis, respiratory infections, skin diseases, secondary infections, etc., in such patients can impede or even confound their recovery. Collectively, it would seem that various nutritional deficiencies are the major cause of secondary immunodeficiency states worldwide and as such represent an extremely important area of research.
