Marine Invertebrate Feeding and the Sedimentary Lipid Record

Organic Geochemistry

Part of the book series: Topics in Geobiology ((TGBI,volume 11))

Abstract

Although it is recognized that many different marine invertebrates affect the flux of lipids in the water column, studies have considered invertebrates in total, that is, as a single factor (Wakeham, 1982; Wakeham et al., 1984; Wakeham and Canuel, 1986). These studies have provided gross information on how invertebrate feeding is important in the processes which determine the eventual lipid distributions of inter-facial sediments. In the consideration of invertebrates, it is usually the crustaceans that have been cited as the important mediators in the flux of organic C (Corner et al., 1986, and references therein). Whereas this invertebrate group is without doubt important in the marine environment, its prominence does not preclude the possibility that in some situations other invertebrate groups may be dominant. Furthermore, little consideration has been given to the effects other groups may have on specific compounds. For example, although crustaceans may be responsible for the major part of the invertebrate effect on sedimentary lipid distributions, a single, not necessarily dominant, species of invertebrates may have a significant effect on a specific lipid.
