Abstract

Although previous studies have demonstrated that acidosis increases bone blood flow, it is unclear whether this is due to a direct effect of hydrogen ion concentration ([H+]) on bone blood vessels or a central effect on vasoregulatory mechanisms. It is also unclear how sensitive bone blood vessels are to changes in [H+] and whether the magnitude of pH changes experienced in physiological and pathological situations are sufficient to influence bone blood flow. This study has investigated the direct effects of [H+] on long bone vascular resistance.
