Abstract

More than 30 years ago Ralph B. Cloward introduced his method of anterior disc extirpation followed by fusion of the involved cervical spinal segments by using bone graft from the iliac crest (Cloward, 1958). To eliminate the postoperative pelvic pain emanating from the donor place, bovine grafts were introduced 15 years later (Taheri and Gueramy, 1972; Cartore and Fortuna, 1969) (Figure 1). Both methods are now well-known in clinical practice but there is still some dispute concerning the bovine grafts. One of the main questions is if there is a similar type of fusion after both procedures.
