Abstract

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) has become a subject of major medical, social, and political concern. It was first reported in Africa in the late 1970s and this “new acquired cellular immunodeficiency” was first described in homosexual men in the United States in 1981 (Gottlieb, Schroff, Schanker, Weisman, Fan, Wolf, & Saxon, 1981; Masur, Michelis, Greene, Onorato, Vande Stouwe, Holzman, Wormser, Brettman, Lange, Murray, & Cunningham-Rundles, 1981).
