Abstract
This chapter gives a very brief review of SGML, giving some of the basics and philosophy of SGML for those who are evaluating HyTime but do not expect to encode documents or write software themselves. This very basic background is sufficient to carry a reader through the first part of this book. We also explore some details of SGML syntax that may not be very familiar even to SGML experts but are especially important when using HyTime. If you are not already familiar with SGML and intend to read the entire book, you will need to supplement this chapter with additional reading and practice. The bibliography lists several appropriate books; van Herwijnen 1994 is a popular and accessible introduction. Goldfarb 1990 is a detailed presentation of every feature of SGML, which incorporates the entire text of the standard
