Abstract
Many roof structures (Fig. 13-1) are designed in accordance with the membrane and bending theories of shells. Roofs such as hyperbolic paraboloids (Fig. 13-2a) and elliptic paraboloids (Fig. 13-2b) are analyzed in accordance with the membrane theory of shells of revolution developed in Chapter 6. Barrel roofs, (Fig. 13-3a) are treated as cylindrical segments in accordance with the bending theory discussed in Chapter 8 with discontinuity edge forces applied along the length of the cylindrical segments. Roofs in the shape of folded plates (Fig. 13-3b) are considered as beams connected at their ridges. All of these roofs are generally assumed to resist uniformly distributed dead and live loads.
