Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is to provide some background information on the physical properties of water and factors affecting the flow of water. This material will be helpful in understanding the development of many of the principles and techniquès presented in the following chapters. A review of the hydrologic or water cycle and some comments on the distribution of water are given. Water is the medium for aquaculture, and we feel that those involved in aquaculture should have a good conception of the hydrosphere. Some readers may be familiar with this material and prefer to go directly to Chapter 2.
