Abstract

Interferons are glycoproteins produced by many of the body’s cells in response to foreign proteins such as viruses, microbes or tumors. There are three types of interferon (IFN): alpha (IFNα), produced by leukocytes; beta (IFNβ), produced by fibroblasts, macrophages and epithelial cells; and gamma (IFNγ), produced by activated T-lymphocytes and natural killer lymphocytes. There are at least 17 genes controlling the production of IFNα, but only one gene for IFNβ and one for IFNγ [1].
