Anticancer Drug Discovery and Development: Natural Products and New Molecular Models

Part of the book series: Developments in Oncology ((DION,volume 74))

Abstract

Current estimates of the American Cancer Society are that during 1992 some 1.1 million Americans will have been diagnosed as having cancer. Additionally, over 500,000 people succumb annually to this disease. At the top of the list of fatal cancers (deaths/yr) is lung cancer (146,000) (1). The other major types of cancers (deaths/yr) are colon/rectum (51,000), breast (46,300), prostate (34,000), non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas (19,400) and leukemias (18,000). Chemotherapy represents an important tool to combat these and other cancers since more than 2 0 percent of cancer patients undergo this treatment.
