Abstract
For half a century liaison psychiatry has been promoted as the way to integrate psychiatry into the whole of medicine.1 Liaison psychiatry could humanize medicine as well as increase its effectiveness and efficiency. Despite numerous citations documenting the effectiveness of liaison psychiatry,2,3,4 resistance to the approach on the part of physicians, including psychiatrists, has hampered development and remains widespread.5 Nevertheless, spurred by initiatives from the National Institute of Mental Health, liaison psychiatry made remarkable progress in the 1970’s. By 1980 almost all psychiatric residency training programs included consultation-liaison (C-L) in their curriculum.
