Abstract

Neurons are highly polarized cells in which several compartments, such as cell body, dendrites, axons and nerve endings can be distinguished. The proteins of the presynaptic nerve terminal are synthesized in the cell body, from where they are targeted down the axon to their site of action. The sorting signal is not known, and there is some debate as to whether membrane proteins of synaptic vesicles leave the cell body assembled in mature synaptic vesicles or in pleiomorphic membranous structures from which synaptic vesicles are derived at later stages (De Camilli and Jahn, [1]).
