Abstract
The involvement of GTP-binding proteins (G proteins) in the regulation of stimulussecretion coupling is extensively documented in a great number of preparations (Gomperts, 1990), and an important regulatory role for G proteins has been described in the transduction process of gustatory and olfactory chemoreceptors (Lancet, 1986; Bruch, 1990). However in the carotid body (CB) chemoreceptor cells, no attempts have been made to clarify the nature and the function of G proteins, although the involvement of second messenger systems in the release of catecholamines (CA) and in the chemoreceptor response (Pérez-García et al., 1991; Gómez-Niño et al., 1992) suggest a modulatory role for G proteins in the transduction-transmission processes in the arterial chemoreceptors.
