Abstract
Evidence that dopamine (DA) may play a role in carotid body (CB) chemotransduction has been reviewed by Eyzaguirre and Zapata (1984). Gonzalez et al. (1992) recently reviewed current theories for O2 and acid chemotransduction mechanisms. Using CBs incubated with radiolabelled tyrosine, it has been shown that hypoxia releases DA from a newly synthesized pool, and that its release is dependent on Ca2+ (Fidone et al., 1982; Gonzalez & Fidone, 1977; Rigual et al., 1991). Acidic conditions or elevated K+ also cause DA release in superfused cat and rabbit CBs.
