Høffding and Bohr: Waves or Particles

  • Chapter

Abstract

After Faye has published his book in 1991 concerning the relationship between Høffding and Bohr, Favrholdt answers once again (in his book of 1992) challenging everyone who intends to defend, following Faye, the influence of Høffding on Bohr to prove any kind of resemblance between their thoughts. Though I consider that Faye has already answered him, I intend with this small work to call the attention to one point that so far, inclusive in Faye’s works, has not been sufficiently stressed. The main problem posed to quantum physics, the need to use either a continuous or a discontinuous descriptions of quantum systems, and the way Bohr solved the problem introducing the concept of complementarity between these descriptions, had already been pointed out by Høffding as early as in 1921 in his book Relation as a Category, a book that Bohr is likely to have read.
