Abstract
The non-invasive diagnosis of hippocampal sclerosis (HS) by MRI forms an important part of pre-surgical evaluation and decision making, and is also important in the investigation of the prevalence and evolution of HS. The cardinal qualitative MRI features of HS are atrophy and increased T2-weighted signal intensity (Jackson et al., 1990; Berkovic et al., 1991). Recently, loss of internal structure of the hippocampus and decreased T1-weighted signal intensity have also been described (Jackson et al., 1993a).
