Abstract
The results of combined in-situ electrochemical and dilatometric studies made with palladium and a Pd0.85Ni0.15 alloy are presented. The metals were charged and discharged electrochemically with hydrogen under constant current conditions. Electrode length changes were measured under normal atmospheric pressure at different charging rates and as a function of hydrogen content. Structural changes were followed by SEM observations. The results are compared to those obtained with hydrogen charging from the gaseous phase. The technique could be used to study other hydrogen absorbing electrodes such as Ti, V, Nb, Zr and intermetallic compounds of the types AB2 and AB5 considered for use in metal hydride batteries.
