Abstract

It has been estimated that between 20–50% of the total operating cost within manufacturing can be attributed to material handling. Furthermore, effective facilities design and planning can reduce these costs by at least 10–30% (Tompkins and White, 1984). Even so, material handling is often an overlooked aspect of factory operations.
