Abstract
The nonobese diabetic (NOD) mouse spontaneously develops insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus as a result of autoimmune destruction of β-cells in the pancreatic islets of Langerhans. It is thus widely accepted as a relevant experimental model for human type I diabetes 1–3. Clinically-defined disease occurs more predominantly in females and can be observed from the age of 3 months. Insulitis always precedes the onset of diabetes, but appears in both males and females from the age of 3–4 weeks4–5.
