Abstract
Intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1; CD54) is an adhesion molecule, that participates in a variety of cell-cell adhesion phenomena1. It serves as a ligand for the leucocyte integrins LFA-1 and Mac-1 2,3 and as a receptor for different pathogens4,5. ICAM-1 is constitutively expressed in vivo on cells of the high endothelial venules and on germinal centre cells in lymph node6,7, whereas its expression is readily induced on leucocytes and different types of adherent cells. ICAM-1 is especially present in areas of inflammation, where its expression of mRNA and protein has been induced by inflammatory mediators, such as lipopolysaccharide, IFNγ, IL-1 and , TNF8.
