Abstract
The past decade has witnessed greatly increased awareness of the multiple roles played by viral agents in immunocompromised patients. This interest, which has been stimulated by the development of effective antiviral chemotherapy for herpes group viruses, in particular, has been greatly facilitated by the development of more direct approaches to diagnosis using molecular biologic and monoclonal antibody technology. Lessened reliance on standard serologic techniques for viral diagnosis has been especially useful in immunocompromised patients in whom humoral responses may be delayed or absent.
