Abstract

Deficits are determined by comparing the patient’s performance with a standard. The standard may be the normative performance of a patient-equivalent population on relevant variables such as age, education, or gender (normative comparison standard). When individual comparison standards are used, the patient’s performance is compared to his or her previous test performances or to estimates of premorbid performance. The patient’s performance may be compared to the level required to perform an activity such as managing one’s finances or driving (competence comparison standard).
