Abstract

Using a simple alveolar model, Piiper and Scheid (1981, 1983) evaluated the limitations imposed by diffusion (Ldiff) and perfusion (Lperf). Their approach enabled one to quantitatively estimate the limitations in gas transport with respect to diffusion and perfusion, and has been applied to several aspects of gas transport (Piiper and Scheid, 1975).
