Abstract
Natural. Killer (NK) cells are capable of mediating spontaneous antibody-independent and non-MHC restricted cytotoxicity against many human neoplastic and virally infected cells without prior sensitization1. The activity of NK cells can be augmented by several. cytokines. Purified IL-2 (Interleukin-2) alone is able to cause direct activation of nonlytic PBLs (Peripheral. blood lymphocytes) into LAK (Lymphokine Activated Killer) cells without known antigen stimuli in vitro2. LAK are capable of binding to and killing a broad range of neoplastic and normal. tissues (both NK-sensitive and NK-resistant)3,4. iFNγ can also influence the immune response by modulating susceptibilility of targets 5.
