Abstract

NORPLANTR subdermal implants comprise a contraceptive modality in which levonorgestrel is continuously released from capsules placed beneath the skin. The capsules are made of a dimethylsiloxane/methylvinylsiloxane copolymer (SilasticR) and are filled with crystalline levonorgestrel. Each capsule is of 34 mm total length with 30 mm of the length being filled with steroid. The diameter is 2.4 mm. Six capsules are placed in a fan-shaped pattern through a single 3 mm incision. Clinical studies have shown effectiveness through five years.
