Abstract

Since 1975, when clinical trials on the contraceptive device NorplantR were initiated by the International Committee for Contraceptive Research (ICCR), a large number of studies of NorplantR have been conducted to address issues varying from use/effectiveness and acceptability of NorplantR among different populations to studies on release rates of levonorgestrel from the device, its specific effects on various organ functions, side effects and continuation rates. These studies were undertaken in different populations and at different times. Accumulated experience from these studies has been reviewed by WHO (WHO 1985) and Sivin (Sivin 1988).
