Abstract
Unlike most other areas of computer-related study, HCI has been faced with a number of exceptional problems and hurdles to impede its progress. Not only were there difficulties in formulating a credible identity and in gaining acceptance in the scientific community, as discussed in Chapter 1; those difficulties were probably symptomatic of certain fundamental issues that had to be resolved.
