Abstract
Schizophrenia is an extremely disabling disorder that produces a wide range of disruptive symptoms in the patient and leads to a significant loss of ability to function independently. Schizophrenia is generally first diagnosed in adolescence or young adulthood, although onset in childhood or in later adulthood does occur. The prevalence of schizophrenia in the general population is relatively low. The data on prevalence vary: findings indicate that the number of people who will be diagnosed as schizophrenic at some point in their life ranges from less than 1 in 1,000 to 1 in 100 (Karno & Norquist, 1989). This disparity in prevalence rates appears to be secondary to the various diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia that are used throughout the world (Karno & Norquist, 1989) as well as the range of symptoms that individuals display.
