Abstract

The main function of the plasma membrane is to provide a barrier between the intracellular milieu and the extracellular environment. Selective ion transport and cellular ion homeostasis depend on plasma membrane ion channels, transporters, and pumps. The integrity of the plasma membrane rests on the underlying cyto-skeleton connected via integrins with the extracellular matrix or the basement membrane. Ischemia-induced irreversible injury is associated with plasma membrane defects, resulting in the release of intracellular components and disruption of ion, and especially of calcium, homeostasis.
