Abstract
This chapter deals briefly with the universal stage and the spindle stage. As noted in Chapter 2, both these instruments have specialized applications that go far beyond routine crystal identification. Detailed discussions of their use may be found in the various books and papers referenced, particularly Muir (1981) for the universal stage and Bloss (1981) for the spindle stage. This chapter will also serve to suggest the pertinence of these instruments to problems of crystal identification, and to describe their manipulation for a few routine procedures.
