Abstract
As more and more image data are acquired and assume the role of “first-class citizens” in information technology, managing and manipulating them as images becomes an important issue to be resolved before we can take full advantage of their information content [CH92]. Image database and visual information system technologies have become major efforts to address this issue, and a variety of commercial systems are now available to accommodate different sizes of image resources, different computational platforms, and different commitments to investment. These systems have been used in an equally wide variety of applications, including medical image management, multimedia libraries, document archives, museums, transaction systems, computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems, geographic information systems, and criminal identification.
