Abstract

As international logistics develops as a field of study and thought, the concept of channels becomes helpful for understanding the behavior patterns of business people. Marketing channels are defined as sets of interdependent groups involved in the process of making a product or service available for use, and the channel should be looked upon as a network that creates value through the generation of form, possession, time, and place utilities. Donald Bowersox described the importance of two specific channels in understanding logistics systems: The transaction channel handles negotiations, contracts, and continually administers trading; the distribution channel provides five functions: adjustment (including the concentration, selection, and dispersion of goods), transfer, storage, handling, and communication. In Chapter 12, mention was made of a third channel, one for documentation.
