Abstract
There are at least 2,200 species of finfish in the coastal and inland waters of the United States and Canada, of which only 25 percent are currently harvested for human food. This tremendous imbalance could be remedied by utilizing species that are not being caught or are being thrown away as “trash fish” in the by-catches for more traditional species. Every year as much as 21 million tons (19 × 106 metric tons) of edible marine fish are thrown away at sea by shrimp trawlers.
