Normalized Mutual Coupling for Multiple Pistons

  • John M. Eargle

Abstract

When two identical low-frequency loudspeakers are placed close to one another, there is a tendency for them to couple together and behave as a single loudspeaker with twice the cone area. Under these conditions, we can expect to get four times the power output, or an increase in output of 6 dB. Three decibels come from the simple fact that we have doubled the electrical power input capability, and an additional 3 dB comes from the increase in radiation impedance.
