Abstract

Adenosine is an endogenous nucleoside that has become an important agent in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. Its major electrophysiologic effects include slowing of the heart rate (negative chronotropic effect) and depression of conduction through the atrioventricular (AV) node (negative dromotropic effect). It is,. the latter effect that has made adenosine one of the more commonly used drugs for the acute termination of supraventricular tachycardias in which the AV node is involved in a reentrant circuit. The purpose of this chapter is to review the clinical cardiac electrophysiology of adenosine, including its role in the diagnosis and termination of tachycardias.
