Abstract
In choosing this title—Emergent Challenges for Universities of the Third Age—the organisers have also presented me with a challenge. In accepting it, I shall take a bold and ambitious line, inspired by some remarks by the President of AIUTA, Professor Jacques Lefevre. He believes the University of the Third Age has made such progress in concept and practice that its mission and responsibilities should be redefined. The world increasingly and urgently needs our experience, our brain power and our participation as well informed citizens. In words echoing President Kennedy’s famous phrase, he said:
In 1994, the real problem is no longer wondering what society is going to do for its ‘old folk’; it is enquiring what older people can do for society. To prepare older citizens for a social, cultural and ecological commitment is becoming a new challenge for the Universities of the Third Age. (Lefevre, 1994) *
