Abstract

It has been found in earlier research that certain components of life-style are crucial to aging and health status. There are many different approaches to defining the concept of life-style (Berbalk and Hahn, 1980; Taylor and Ford, 1981; Tokarski, 1985). In this study life-style is defined as a theoretical category consisting of models of behaviour and the choices of an individual as a member of society (Pohjolainen, 1991). The different areas of life-style include, for example, living habits, social participation, hobbies and life-satisfaction (Fig. 1). Life-style consists of two main components, the objective and subjective. In the elderly life-style is determined by a number of different factors: socio-economic status, health, aging processes, earlier life history, genetic factors, etc.
