Abstract
In 1990 some 13% of Europeans, excluding the former USSR, were aged in excess of 65 years (United Nations, 1992a). An European female born in 1950–55 could have expected to live to age 68.0 years, her brother to age 63.6; in 1990–95 she could expect 78.5 years and her brother 72.0 years; by 2020–2025 she could expect 82.2 years and her brother 76.3 years (United Nations 1991; Table 44). European societies therefore are aging. The demographic transition, which is leading to increased absolute numbers of elderly people making up a greater proportion of the population, is to be seen world-wide (Table 1) and results from three factors: decline in mortality, decline in fertility and increase in life expectancy (United Nations, 1992a).
