Abstract
Milk is expelled from the alveolar lumen by contraction of the myoepithelial cells in response to the suckling stimuli and subsequent release of oxytocin (Robinson, 1986). The action of oxytocin is dependent on availability of external calcium (Olins and Bremel, 1984). Ionomycin is a calcium ionophore that increases protein secretion from mammary gland acini and facilitates lipid secretion by apparent leakage from lipid droplets (Turner et al., 1992). Oxytocin and ionomycin were used in an in vitro system developed to study the process of milk lipid secretion. We describe the stimulatory effects of oxytocin and ionomycin on secretion of milk constituents by their action on myoepithelial cells in the presence or absence of external calcium (Ca2+).
