Structural Brain Abnormalities in Schizophrenia: Distribution, Etiology, and Implications

Book cover Neural Development and Schizophrenia

Abstract

Structural brain abnormalities (SBAs) are now a widely-accepted feature of schizophrenia. More than 200 studies of schizophrenics have reported SBAs, with most implicating limbic system pathology and enlargement of the third and lateral ventricles (Bogerts, 1991; Cannon, 1991, Raz & Raz, 1990). However, many questions remain regarding the distribution, prevalence, etiology, and functional implications of SBAs in schizophrenia.
