Potential Mechanisms of Defective Brain Development in Schizophrenia

  • Chapter
Neural Development and Schizophrenia

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSA,volume 275))

Abstract

Unraveling the biological basis of schizophrenia is a formidable task. At present, there is considerable interest in theories which suggest that orderly brain development is affected in this disorder and that alterations of brain organization arising from disturbed ontogenesis are causally linked to schizophrenic psychopathology. Recognition of a developmental pathophysiology in schizophrenia may be critical for further understanding the disease, and potentially important for its prevention.
