Abstract

In recent years, the hypothesis that disturbances of brain development during gestation may contribute to the risk of adult schizophrenia has gained momentum. This hypothesis was, in part, given new impetus by our finding in 1988 that exposure to influenza during the second trimester of gestation increased the risk for adult schizophrenia (Mednick, Machon, Huttunen & Bonett). In this introductory chapter, we provide: a review of the evidence that supports the hypothesis of a neurodevelopmental process underlying schizophrenia, a brief introduction to the individual chapters included in this volume, and a concluding section regarding our hopes for the future of the multidisciplinary approach to understanding the neurodevelopment of schizophrenia.
