Abstract

Recent work suggests that T-cell-derived cytokines may influence the development of mucosal immune responses, in particular, the characteristic production of IgA antibody by plasma cells lying beneath epithelial basement membranes and present in secretory glandular tissues. It is now clear that murine interleukin-5 (mIL5) and mIL6 selectively enhance IgA reactivity of activated B-cells in vitro,1-6 alone or in combination with each other or different factors, apparently by enhancing their terminal differentiation.7-10 Although there is no direct evidence that these factors play a similar role in vivo, it has recently been shown that T-cells apparently corresponding to the Th2 type, those secreting a characteristic pattern of cytokines including IL-5 and IL-6,11 are present at high frequency in IgA effector sites of murine mucosal tissues.12
