In January 1993, the Coalition on Smoking OR Health (the American Cancer Society, American Lung Association, and American Heart Association) called for a two dollar increase in the federal excise tax on cigarettes and equivalent taxes on other tobacco products. At the time, the cigarette tax in the United States had just increased by 4 cents a pack, bringing the federal tax on a package of cigarettes to 24 cents per pack, still the lowest in the industrialized world.
