Prediction in Weight Management Outcome: Implications for Practice

Obesity Treatment

Abstract

Despite hundreds of published, controlled studies reporting the treatment of obesity, results with all of those reporting long-term data are identical: virtually all patients treated regain the lost weight within five years (NIH Technology Assessment Conference Panel, 1993). This finding has contributed to the concept of obesity as a chronic disorder, requiring treatment in a continuing care model (Perri, Nezu, & Viegener, 1992; Goodrick & Foreyt, 1991). But even using this model, which requires the utilization of considerable resources and time, results are modest at best.
