Abstract
Embryos, following activation of their developmental program at fertilization usually progress to adulthood as a continuous series of proliferative and differentiative events. In the mammalian embryo this is also the usual course. However they have to pass one critical point, namely implantation, the stage at which the embryo assumes a more intimate physical association with the maternal uterine tissues.
