Abstract
The original interest in liquid perfluorocarbons in medical research stemmed from their very high oxygen carrying capacity (Faithfull, 1992). Increased oxygen delivery to the retina has already been demonstrated following intravascular administration of perfluorocarbon emulsions (Braun et al, 1992: Thoreson and Purple, 1987). Pure liquid perfluorocarbons have also been used in vitreal surgery, where their low viscosity, high specific gravity, and optical clarity are attractive properties in the treatment of retinal detachment (Chang, 1987). The feasibility of vitreous exchange with liquid perfluorocarbons therefore raises the possibility of exploiting the oxygen carrying properties of such materials to relieve retinal hypoxia in ischaemic disorders of the retina.
