Abstract

Cell adhesion molecules play an important role in many cellular processes, such as sperm-egg binding, organogenesis (Hoffmann et al., 1982) and lymphocyte migration (Springer, 1990; Albelda, 1991). Furthermore, in the immune system, they are crucial in T lymphocyte-accessory cell and T lymphocyte-target cell interactions which are required, respectively, for the induction of immune responses or for effector cell function (Dustin et al., 1987; Springer et al., 1987; Martz, 1987). They also mediate a variety of other, non-antigen-specific, cell-cell and cell-substrate interactions in the immune system, including lymphocyte adhesion to endothelium during lymphocyte recirculation through lymphoid organs and lymphocyte extravasation in chronic inflammation (Stoolman, 1989; Chin et al., 1990; Jalkanen et al., 1990). Here we will highlight the role of cell adhesion molecules in lymphocyte — endothelium interactions in lymphocyte extravasation in lymph nodes and in chronically inflamed tissues.
