Abstract
An extensive network of Thy-1+/Factor XIIIa+ dermal dendrocytes (DD) (Table 1) exists within the papillary dermis in lesions of cutaneous T cell lymphoma (CTCL). To further characterize these cells and to study the role that activation signals and adhesion molecules play in the cellular dynamics of CTCL, immunohistochemical staining of formalin fixed, paraffin embedded tissue sections was used to study expression of high endothelial cell antigen-1 (HECA-452) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in lesions of CTCL as compared to those of psoriasis, Rhus dermatitis and normal skin. In diseased skin, 10–60% of epidermotropic lymphocytes were PCNA+, comparable to the numbers of Ki-67+ and human mucosal leukocyte antigen (HML)-1+ cells seen in previous studies. HECA-452 expression by dermal lymphocytes ranged from 1–42%. Only in lesions of CTCL were appreciable numbers of epidermal HECA-452+ lymphocytes present (mean = 31%+). PCNA+ lymphocytes were routinely seen only in CTCL and were limited to a subset of cells within the epidermis.
