Abstract
The etiology of cutaneous T cell lymphomas (CTCL) is still unknown, but the similarities it shares with the human T-lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-associated adult T cell lymphoma led to the speculation that a retrovirus may be involved as a causative agent. Many studies using electron microscopy and serological tests have supported this hypothesis. The recently available powerful techniques of molecular biology (D’Incan et al., 1992a) have shown that some cases of cutaneous T cell lymphomas outside HTLV-1 endemic areas are associated with the genomic integration of a related or, more probably, a defective HTLV-1 provirus. To date, no viral isolate was established from a case of CTCL. Moreover, the incidence of a retroviral infection in CTCL seems to be low although highly underestimated.
